Small magnitude 2.8 earthquake 3 km northeast of Malmberget, Sweden

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 2.8 quake in Sweden near Malmberget, Gällivare Municipality, Norrbotten County, only 10 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Thursday, July 10th, 2025, at 2:44 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 0. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Malmberget (pop. 6,000) located 3 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Gaellivare (pop. 10,400) located 7 km from the epicenter. In Porjus (pop. 240, 47 km away), and Hakkas (pop. 370, 47 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
