Small magnitude 3.6 earthquake 13 km northeast of Catanzaro, Italy A magnitude 3.6 earthquake near Catanzaro, Province of Catanzaro, Calabria, Italy, was reported only 6 minutes ago by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Friday, January 23rd, 2026, at 3:20 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH), which listed it as a magnitude 3.3 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Piano D'Agazio (pop. 770) located 2 km from the epicenter, Sellia Marina (pop. 3,900) 4 km away, and Catanzaro (pop. 79,000) 13 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Giovanni in Fiore (pop. 17,400) located 37 km from the epicenter, Nicastro-Sambiase (pop. 55,700) 37 km away, Lamezia Terme (pop. 70,500) 38 km away, Crotone (pop. 64,600) 38 km away, Sambiase (pop. 20,000) 40 km away, and Cosenza (pop. 63,900) 59 km away.
