Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.2 just reported 9 km west of Tsukuba, Japan An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred only 20 minutes ago 9 km west of Tsukuba, Japan, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 50. km beneath the epicenter near Tsukuba, Tsukuba Shi, Ibaraki, Japan, in the morning on Sunday, January 25th, 2026, at 11:46 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Shimo-tsuma (pop. 42,500) located 4 km from the epicenter, Tsukuba (pop. 175,600) 9 km away, Shimodate (pop. 63,700) 11 km away, Chikusei (pop. 100,800) 13 km away, Tsukuba (pop. 241,700) 17 km away, Tsuchiura (pop. 144,400) 22 km away, Koga (pop. 139,300) 25 km away, Mito (pop. 270,700) 44 km away, Tokyo (pop. 9,733,300) 63 km away, and Kawasaki (pop. 1,538,300) 80 km away.
