Significant magnitude 6.0 quake hits 68 km east of Juanjui, Peru early morning Peru was shaken near Juanjui, Mariscal Cáceres Province, Region de San Martin, by an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 only 10 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 113. km beneath the epicenter near Juanjui, Mariscal Cáceres Province, Region de San Martin, Peru, early morning on Wednesday, April 1st, 2026, at 6:20 am local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.7. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 6.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Picota (pop. 6,700) located 32 km from the epicenter, Bellavista (pop. 15,200) 53 km away, Chazuta (pop. 8,000) 60 km away, Juanjui (pop. 37,700) 68 km away, La Banda (pop. 24,900) 73 km away, and Saposoa (pop. 14,900) 75 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Yurimaguas (pop. 41,800) located 134 km from the epicenter.
