Moderate magnitude 4.5 earthquake 18 miles southwest of Pelican, Alaska, United States

A very shallow magnitude 4.5 earthquake was reported in the morning near Pelican, Hoonah-Angoon, Alaska, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Friday, April 10th, 2026, at 8:43 am local time at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Pelican (pop. 91) located 18 miles from the epicenter, and Elfin Cove (pop. 20) 26 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Hoonah (pop. 760) located 49 miles from the epicenter, and Gustavus (pop. 430) 52 miles away.
