Moderate magnitude 4.6 quake hits 107 km northeast of Tiakur, Indonesia, in the early evening The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.6 quake in Indonesia near Tiakur, Southwest Maluku Regency, Maluku, 32 minutes ago. The earthquake struck early Wednesday evening, September 16th, 2026, at 6:37 pm local time, at an intermediate depth of 113.40 km. The magnitude and other quake parameters may still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. A second report was later issued by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, which also listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which recorded a magnitude of 4.6, and the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake, which also recorded a magnitude of 4.6. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tiakur (pop. 5,200), located 107 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update the magnitude and depth if they change and follow up if other significant news about the quake becomes available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
