Wow ..... a long post.

Here is where we are at:

An 8 day EPG based on DVB-EIT is not far away. Mostly a matter of logistics to collect the relevent data from content suppliers. This will be in English only to start. The UEC STB will only support a now/next EPG, we are investigating a new EPG app for the STB that we can over-the-air download to fix this.

Audio levels are not right yet, we're working on this but there are uplinker in other parts of the world that are a real dog's breakfast ......

You need to distinguish MPEG4 - Part 2 video is the same as MPEG2, part 10 video is the Advanced Video Codec profile (H.264) - this has the real benifit. The problem is the avalability of reasonably priced STBs and the convoluted nature of the MPEG4 royalty arrangements. You might also look un DVB-S2 (uses turbo codes for the FEC).

Video quality - any video on a plasma or LCD with the sharpness set to max will look like a bucket of puss. These dispay devices add soooo many artifacts of their own to the picture that I found them unwatchabble (after 25 years of critically looking at video pictures). The "sharpness" fuctions adds even more artifacts and acts to ehnance the existing mpeg artifacts. Point is that domestic TV manufactureses don't anderstand the concept of appeture correction and confuse it whth luminance channel HF boost and overshoot on high rise time liminance objects. Next time you watch some tennis, note the dark lines either side of the white lines along the side of the court - these are not in the original picture - they are a product of your tv's "sharpness" processor.
