Well, that's the big question isn't it? What does it all mean.

To me, tree spirits, the soul material that makes up trees and vegetation, look a lot like dogs (and other various animals). I see them frequently and that is how it looks to my eye. So I would think that this is why you saw the dog face in the tree.
