Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.5 just reported 16 km northeast of San Francisco de Quito, Ecuador 4.5 quake 23 Nov 11:03 am (GMT -5) An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred in the morning on Tuesday, November 23rd, 2021, at 11:03 am local time near San Francisco de Quito, Cantón Quito, Provincia de Pichincha, Ecuador, as reported by the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 4 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In San Francisco de Quito (pop. 1,399,800) located 16 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Sangolqui (pop. 5,100) located 20 km from the epicenter, Cayambe (pop. 26,600) 36 km away, Machachi (pop. 25,700) 43 km away, Otavalo (pop. 32,300) 46 km away, Cotacachi (pop. 8,200) 53 km away, and Atuntaqui (pop. 17,500) 59 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Santo Domingo de los Colorados (pop. 200,400) located 87 km from the epicenter, Latacunga (pop. 51,700) 89 km away, and Pujili (pop. 16,200) 95 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
