Moderate magnitude 4.2 earthquake 2 km southeast of Bayındır, Turkey 4.2 quake 18 Oct 3:55 pm (GMT +3) Just 17 minutes ago, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Bayındır, İzmir, Turkey. The tremor was recorded early afternoon on Wednesday, October 18th, 2023, at 3:55 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 9.7 km below the surface. The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) at magnitude 4.3, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 4.0, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.5, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.5, and The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) at magnitude 4.3. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Bayındır (pop. 16,900) located 2 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Tire (pop. 47,200) located 15 km from the epicenter, Torbalı (pop. 50,300) 27 km away, Ödemiş (pop. 67,200) 27 km away, Kemalpaşa (pop. 30,400) 32 km away, Turgutlu (pop. 103,300) 32 km away, and Selcuk (pop. 29,100) 38 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Karabağlar (pop. 458,000) located 49 km from the epicenter, and Izmir (pop. 2,500,600) 51 km away.
