Small 3.9 quake hits near Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Provinz Las Palmas, Canary Islands, Spain 3.9 quake 10 Sep 7:20 pm (GMT +1) An earthquake of magnitude 3.9 occurred only 13 minutes ago 23 km northwest of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 20.5 km beneath the epicenter near Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Provinz Las Palmas, Canary Islands, Spain, early evening on Tuesday, September 10th, 2024, at 7:20 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), which listed it as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Galdar (pop. 24,400) located 3 km from the epicenter, Arucas (pop. 36,300) 13 km away, and Santa Brigida (pop. 19,200) 20 km away.
