Magnitude 4.8 earthquake strikes near Hihifo, Niuas, Tonga

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 4.8 quake in Tonga near Hihifo, Niuas, only 24 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Tuesday 19 January 2021 at 10:24 pm local time at an intermediate to considerable depth of 164.2 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
