Small magnitude 3.9 earthquake 27 km northwest of Paphos, Cyprus 3.9 quake Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus, Sep 18, 2022 12:50 pm (GMT +3) Just 12 minutes ago, a 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck near Paphos, Cyprus. The tremor was recorded around noon on Sunday, September 18th, 2022, at 12:50 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface. The event was filed by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the first seismological agency to report it. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 3.9 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Inia (pop. 390) located 17 km from the epicenter, Peyia (pop. 2,500) 17 km away, Kissonerga (pop. 2,000) 22 km away, Polis (pop. 2,000) 22 km away, Tala (pop. 1,700) 23 km away, Chloraka (pop. 3,600) 24 km away, Empa (pop. 4,900) 25 km away, and Paphos (pop. 36,000) 27 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Geroskipou (pop. 8,300) located 30 km from the epicenter.
