Moderate tremor of magnitude 4.2 just reported 37 km northwest of Manta Ecuador, Ecuador 4.2 quake 20 Jul 7:15 am (GMT -5) A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Manta Ecuador, Cantón Manta, Provincia de Manabi, Ecuador, was reported only 9 minutes ago by the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Tuesday 20 July 2021 at 7:15 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Manta Ecuador (pop. 183,200) located 37 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Montecristi (pop. 18,400) located 46 km from the epicenter, Rocafuerte (pop. 10,300) 64 km away, Caracas (pop. 37,100) 72 km away, Jipijapa (pop. 35,900) 75 km away, Sucre (pop. 15,300) 83 km away, and Bolivar (pop. 17,300) 95 km away.
