An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred only 15 minutes ago 55 km southwest of Marrakech, Morocco, the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera, IPMA) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 9 km beneath the epicenter near Marrakech, Marrakesh-Safi, Morocco, late at night on Thursday, November 16th, 2023, at 11:38 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Oukaimeden (pop. 4,400, 36 km away), Setti Fatma (pop. 22,300, 53 km away), and Marrakech (pop. 839,300, 55 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
