Moderate magnitude 4.9 earthquake 113 km northwest of Luwuk, Indonesia A magnitude 4.9 earthquake near Luwuk, Banggai Regency, Sulawesi Tengah, Indonesia, was reported only 6 minutes ago by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Indonesia. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 11. km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Wednesday, March 11th, 2026, at 10:12 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Luwuk (pop. 47,800) located 113 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.

Magnitude 5.0 earthquake strikes near Waingapu, Kabupaten Sumba Timur, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported a magnitude 5.0 quake in Indonesia near Waingapu, Kabupaten Sumba Timur, East Nusa Tenggara, only 5 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Wednesday, March 11th, 2026, at 5:45 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 37. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Waingapu (pop. 35,900) located 32 km from the epicenter, and Ruteng (pop. 41,500) 112 km away.
