Small magnitude 3.4 quake hits 13 miles northwest of Big Spring, Texas, United States early evening 3.4 quake 18 Mar 7:41 pm (GMT -5) An earthquake of magnitude 3.4 occurred early evening on Friday, March 18th, 2022, at 7:41 pm local time near Big Spring, Howard County, Texas, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 4.3 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 3.4 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.4. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ackerly (pop. 230) located 12 miles from the epicenter, Big Spring (pop. 28,900) 13 miles away, and Stanton (pop. 2,900) 17 miles away. In Lamesa (pop. 9,400, 31 miles away), Midland (pop. 133,000, 34 miles away), and Andrews (pop. 13,800, 51 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
