Small magnitude 2.8 quake hits 2 km southeast of Gloggnitz, Austria late at night 2.8 quake 11 Oct 11:04 pm (GMT +2) A very shallow magnitude 2.8 earthquake was reported late at night near Gloggnitz, Neunkirchen, Lower Austria, Austria. According to Austria's Central Research Institute for Meterology and Geodynamics in Vienna (ZAMG), the quake hit on Wednesday, October 11th, 2023, at 11:04 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 0 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The Eötvös Loránd Research Network of the Kövesligethy Radó Seismological Observatory in Budapest, Hungary (ELRN), which listed it as a magnitude 2.7 earthquake. A third agency, Hungary's Seismological Observatory (Hungarian National Seismological Network), reported the same quake at magnitude 2.7. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Enzenreith (pop. 760) located 1 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Gloggnitz (pop. 4,700) located 2 km from the epicenter, Pottschach (pop. 4,800) 6 km away, and Kirchberg am Wechsel (pop. 1,800) 6 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Wimpassing im Schwarzatale (pop. 1,600) located 7 km from the epicenter, Ternitz (pop. 7,400) 8 km away, Neunkirchen (pop. 11,500) 11 km away, and Puchberg am Schneeberg (pop. 2,700) 15 km away. In Wr. Neustadt (pop. 44,800, 26 km away), and Wien (pop. 1,691,500, 68 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
